Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there an age requirement to join The Seniors Coalition?

No! There is no age requirement to join The Seniors Coalition; in fact, we encourage all children, grandchildren, care-givers, or anyone else concerned about the quality of life and economic well-being of America's seniors to join today!

2.

Do you offer any benefits or discounts to TSC Members?

The Seniors Coalition is proud to announce a brand-new Member Benefits program available to members of TSC. While The Seniors Coalition is primarily an education and issue advocacy organization representing the interest of Ameria's senior citizens, one of the most requested items by our members is a Member Benefits program. 3.

What is your stance on the President's Social Security plan for personal retirement accounts?

The Seniors Coalition supports reforms to the Social Security System that would give beneficiaries more ownership of their retirement accounts and eliminate government access to saved Social Security dollars.

The president's proposed personal retirement accounts would act as a personal lock-box for workers.  As workers would be able to allocate a portion of their Social Security contributions to a personal account, this portion of their retirement will be effectually locked away from government access for frivolous spending on wasteful pork-barrel projects.

Two conditions must be met, however, when it comes to any reform plan for Social Security.  First, proposals must not reduce or eliminate benefits promised to present retirees and those soon reaching the age of retirement.  Secondly, proposals must take into consideration those individuals who have been actively working in the marketplace for many years and contributing to the Social Security Trust Fund.  They, who have not had adequate time to contribute to their personal retirement account, must be allowed a transition benefit that would calibrate a Social Security benefit that will supplement a smaller savings in their personal accounts due to the fact they have not had much time to make contributions.

It is important to emphasize that personal retirement accounts will not completely replace the current Social Security system, nor will it be a mandatory contribution system.

4.

What is TSC’s position on gun control?

The Seniors Coalition firmly supports the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. We believe that in taking up the responsibility of keeping firearms in the home, gun owners also take up the responsibility for the safe use and storage of their firearms. We, therefore, encourage the use of safety devices, safe storage and use in an effort to avoid tragedy.

5. I’ve heard TSC receives its funding directly through the drug companies. Is this correct?

TSC is qualified by the IRS as a 501 (c)(4) tax-exempt entity. As a senior advocacy organization, we solicit donations from individual members and supporters (defined as seniors who make small contributions) by way of a robust direct mail program – evidenced by our current 990 tax return that shows 90 percent of our funding is derived from individual contributions made by our members.

TSC does develop educational campaigns targeted to seniors for which we seek unrestricted grants from private and corporate donors. These unrestricted grants are governed by TSC policies and are used to fulfill our mission to protect the retirement security of seniors, no the grantors’ interests.

These grant requests are premised on the legislative agenda developed by TSC and approved by its Board of Directors. We have in the past, or example, conducted some campaigns that criticized the brand drug industry (the 2000 Pipeline Drug Amendment that sought to unfairly extend patents on some brand drugs) despite the fact the brand drug industry have been supporters on other issues we advocate on behalf of seniors. TSC prides itself on its independence and focus on advocating for our members.

TSC should not be confused with other senior advocacy group(s) who do receive a majority, if not all, of their funding from private or corporate interests, and who may arguable be unduly influenced by the interests of the donor entity. TSC, on the other hand, principally relies on the financial contributions of individual members and supporters for its continued existence.
