Grandma Green's Notebook

Hello, Everyone!

I am having some problems with my Grandma Green's notebook section on our website so I had the staff put this entry on the news section of our website. Hopefully my notebook will be up and running soon. Please check back often.

I have been so busy with the many issues facing senior citizens that I’m just now sitting down to update my notebook entries. I’ve been out and about, going to town meetings and speaking on behalf of senior citizens. I have also made it a point to call personally and individually at least 25 seniors each day.

With the health care debate on the front burner, we all need to write our members of Congress and tell them to steer clear of policies that will hurt seniors. When Representative Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) came up with his car analogy, he made an excellent point: “People want their health care system tuned up,” he said. “They don’t want it repossessed.” I agree with Congressman Hensarling that health care overhaul should “empower the individual,” and it certainly should include some type of medical malpractice reform.

We also need to tell the politicians not to mess with our Medicare. It’s been suggested that paying for health care reform will rest heavily on the backs of senior citizens, with one proposal being floated to dip into Medicare funds to the tune of about $500 billion. Some politicians want to use our Medicare money to insure the uninsured, and this would include paying the health care of illegal immigrants.

The staff at TSC and I have put together a long list of issues about health care reform that should concern every senior citizen. We call it our “Seniors' Call to Arms.” We hope every senior in America will join us in standing up against proposals we know will hurt us in health care and other areas. On the Social Security front, for example, we seniors have been told that we won’t get a COLA for two years. This needs to be changed!

Apparently, many Americans—not just seniors—have grave concerns about what’s going on in Congress, especially about health care reform. A recent poll shows that 49 percent of Americans oppose the plans currently under consideration by Congress. Just remember, any bill enacted today will not just affect seniors. The legislation will also affect every American now and for future generations to come.

Let’s all put the pressure on the politicians and encourage our friends and family to do the same. I am!
