A pet can mean many things to people at different stages in their life. To a child, it is a new friend. To a young adult who has moved out for the first time, they are a comfort. To a senior, they are all those things and much more. For a senior, with the children moved out or long gone, the home can seem empty. Numerous studies have found that the over 65 population in America are prone to loneliness and stress-related illness. A study published in the journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that pets could be beneficial to a senior's sense of well-being. The study showed that owning a pet is an alternative way to possibly relieve that loneliness and stress. Thus owning a pet can be a strong preventative that you may not have thought about.
The study was conducted on 1,000 senior citizens. It concluded that benefits of pet ownership include an increased sense of well being, reduced anxiety and stress, as well as decreased feelings of loneliness and isolation. The study also found that pets can lower blood pressure while increasing happiness; and pets create opportunities for socializing with others. They can decrease depression and are a fun and enjoyable way to exercise.
Having a pet can be a great asset but a potential pet owner may worry that his medical problems- or immobility- will impede his ability to care for the pet; with a little investigation, he may find that it isn't so difficult.
There are groomers, trainers, and veterinarians that make house calls. Some groomers have a van service that can groom your pet right in front of your home. If it is difficult to walk the dog, there are professional dog walkers. And there are pet supply companies who will deliver various pet supplies, including food, and medication, to your doorstep.
Such a person may also consider adopting an older pet- one that is already house trained. Puppies and kittens are certainly cuter, but demand more time and energy of their owners. To find an older pet, contact your local chapter of The Humane Society or animal shelter.
Adopting or purchasing a furry friend can be the companionship a lot of seniors want. Before you plan to adopt or purchase, be sure you understand all that is required for the pet's quality of life. If you are willing to put in the time, money, responsibility and love for the pet, then you and your pet will have a life full of love.
